Australia provides 33 scholarships

The government of Australia has provided 33 higher-education scholarships to the Maldives.

Country Scholarship Coordinator Dr Ibrahim Hassan told Sun Online that this includes 20 Master's Degree courses and 13 Bachelor's Degree courses in the fields of Education, Environmental Studies, and Governance and Public Administration.

A function was held for the students selected for the scholarships, at Traders Hotel on Monday evening. The function was attended by Minister of Education Dr Aishath Shiham as the guest of honour, Minister of Environment Thorig Ibrahim, and Australian Ambassador to Sri Lanka and Maldives Robyn Mudie.

Speaking at the ceremony, Dr Aishath Shiham highlighted the importance of prioritising higher education for the country’s development. She said that the government would put together a master plan on high education over the next six months, to facilitate systematic solutions to problems faced in this regard.

She thanked the government of Australia for its aid for the development and expansion of human resources in the Maldives.

The government of Australia also provided 33 higher-education scholarships last year, under its Australia Awards Scholarships program.
