The Ministry of Environment and Energy has signed an agreement with Al-Habshi Consultants, for the design and supervision of water supply system and sewerage system projects in several islands.
The agreement was signed by Minister of Environment and Energy Thorig Ibrahim on behalf of the government, and Abdulla Al-Habshi on behalf of Al-Habshi Consultants.
Environment Ministry has said the agreement covers the design and supervision of sewerage system projects in Baa Thulhaadhoo, Noonu Velidhoo, Raa Hulhudhuffaaru, Gaafu Alifu Kolamaafushi, and Gaafu Dhaalu Gadhdhoo; and water supply system projects in the abovementioned islands excluding Gadhdhoo.
Speaking at the ceremony, Thorig said that the government hopes to complete the projects before the end of 2016.
He said that the provision of basic public services in all islands is one of the major goals of the government, and that similar projects would be initiated in many other islands soon.
The ministry said that the cost of the project is estimated at $20 million, and that it is co-financed by the government of Maldives ($1.09 million) and OPEC Fund for International Development ($18.91 million).
