Official results of by-elections announced

The official results of the four by-elections held last Saturday have been announced today.

The results announced at the function held at Elections Commission main office today indicate that Thimarafushi seat was won by Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) candidate Ahmed Shareef Adam, and Kaashidhoo seat was won by Jumhooree Party candidate Abdullah Jabir.

Kumundhoo Island Council by-election was won by PPM candidate Mohamed Shafee, and Gaadhiffushi Council by-election was won by Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) candidate Mohamed Irshad.

Shareef won the Thimarafushi seat with 56.9 percent of votes, which is 1756 of total 3086 votes. His competitor and MDP candidate Mohamed Mustafa received 1327 votes, which is 43 percent.

Jabir won the Kaashidhoo seat with 54.29 percent of votes, which is 1107 of total 2039 votes. His competitor and MDP candidate Dhonbilaiy Ahmed Haleem received 919 votes, which is 45.07 percent.

Shafee won the Kumundhoo Island Council by-election with 257 votes, while Irshad won Gaadhiffushi Island Council by-election with 223 votes.

President of Elections Commission Fuad Thaufeeg said that 29 complaints were received regarding the elections, all of which have been looked into and responded to.

“The official results are announced today after replying to all 29 complaints which were received,” Fuad said.

Elections Commission expressed confidence that none of the complaints could have any effect on the election results.

Parliament office has stated that Thimarafushi MP Ahmed Shareef will take his oath tomorrow, while Kaashidhoo MP Abdullah Jabir will take his oath on Thursday.

Jabir taking his oath is delayed due to him being out of the country.
