Environment Ministry, Defence Ministry sign MoU on chemicals database

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between the Ministry of Environment and Energy and Ministry of Defence and National Security, regarding the establishment of a database on chemicals used in the Maldives.

The agreement was signed at a ceremony in Girifushi this morning, by Minister of State for Environment and Energy Mohamed Ibrahim, and Minister of State for Defence and National Security Mohamed Zuhair.

Defence Ministry has said that the establishment of the database would facilitate sharing of information regarding chemicals used in the Maldives.

Zuhair highlighted that local industries are expanding as a result of development, which means that the amount of resources used in the industries, including chemicals, is also on the rise.

He said that the chemicals presently being imported to the Maldives unfortunately include substances that are harmful to the environment and public health.

Zuhair also urged everyone to work towards finding solutions to waste management that are safe for the environment and public health.

Mohamed Ibrahim said that the MoU signed today would benefit the country in many ways.
