Home Minister, Police Commissioner summoned to Criminal Court

Minister of Home Affairs Umar Naseer and Commissioner of Police Hussain Waheed have been summoned to the Criminal Court.

They were notified to attend the court at 7:30 p.m. yesterday (Sunday) regarding failure by the police to implement an order to keep several suspects charged with terrorism in custody to take them to court, in relation to the arson attacks on three government buildings in Gaafu Dhaalu Thinadhoo on 8 February 2012.

This issue was discussed with the two officials by Chief Judge of Criminal Court Abdulla Mohamed.

In addition to the Home Minister and the Police Commissioner, Commissioner of Prisons Mohamed Husham, and President of Police Integrity Commission (PIC) Fathimath Sareera were also summoned to the court at 7:30 p.m. yesterday. However it has not been possible to confirm at the time of publication, if they attended court.

Although the police did not implement the order regarding this case earlier, a recent order to keep 13 suspects in custody to take them to court was implemented on Sunday.

A total of 89 people have been prosecuted for the arson attacks on the Police Station, Atoll Council Office, and Court in Thinadhoo.
