Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) Parliamentary Group Leader and Mulaku MP Abdullah Yameen has said that during the parliamentary election of 2009, the three most wanted seats by Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) were the seats of Th. Thimarafushi, M. Mulaku and M. Dhiggaru.

Speaking at the function held in Guraidhoo last night to celebrate PPM’s victory in the Thimarafushi by-election, Yameen said that MDP followed their advisors and attempted to defeat the coalition - of Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) and People’s Alliance (PA) - in the campaigns for Thimarafushi and two Meemu atoll seats in 2009. MDP was working on the advice of foreign groups, who had warned them of the dangers of allowing Yameen, Ahmed Nazim and Ghassan Maumoon representing these three regions in the parliament instead of MDP.

“Foreign groups advise MDP that Abdullah Yameen being in the parliament poses of great danger to MDP. Ahmed Nazim being in the parliament is of great danger to MDP! And Ghassan Maumoon being in the parliament is also of great danger to MDP!” Yameen said.

Yameen said that MDP did everything in their power to defeat them in that election. However out of the three seats, MDP could only win the Thimarafushi seat. The ‘golden seat’ has now been returned to PPM, and members of PPM were celebrating claiming what is rightfully theirs.

“I am very proud of the Thimarafushi seat. I thank God for PPM’s victory in this campaign through Ahmed Shareef Adam,” Yameen said.

Yameen stated that Shareef will work for the benefit of the people of Thimarafushi, Gaadhiffushi and Guraidhoo in the Parliament, with the support of PPM Parliamentary Group Members.

Yameen called on MDP to cease using harsh words, and begin working with the people of the country. He said that it is high time MDP showed that they are capable of working with the people of Maldives.

“Success will never be on MDP’s side if they continue to torch and damage buildings, and destroy the development achieved by the country,” Yameen said.

He noted that the past three years when MDP ruled the country, were dark pages in the history of Maldives - and now the time has come to overcome those hard times.
