Juvenile Justice Unit (JJU) has said that 159 minors have been brought under their custody over different types of cases in this year.
In a press conference conducted by Home Ministry on Thursday, Hamid Yoosuf, Executive Director of JJU said that minors in the community under their supervision and minors in house arrest were suspects arrested and brought to JJU by the police over different types of crimes. He said that counseling and several other types of sessions that were required for them were in progress.
Hameed highlighted the importance of having an Act for children’s rights in order to facilitate the efforts of JJU in minimizing and rehabilitating the minors committing crimes. For that reason, he added that the draft Act has been sent to Attorney General’s Office.
JJU said that rehabilitation and prevention programs were being conducted in order to correct and bring back the arrested minors into the community. JJU also stated that 499 people who work in juvenile justice system have been trained in this year.
Hamid said that discussions have been carried out with concerned authorities regarding establishment of a correctional center for children.
