Boca slips to 2-1 loss against Tigre

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) — An own-goal by Boca Junior's Rolando Schiavi handed a 2-1 victory to Tigre on Sunday and dropped the famous Buenos Aires club into a tie for first place in Argentina's first division.

Diego Morales' 27th minute free kick gave Tigre a 1-0 lead before Boca's Juan Insaurralde's equalizing in the 79th minute.

Schiavi headed the ball past keeper Agustin Orion in the 88th as he was tried to defend a Tigre free kick.

Boca's loss allowed Newell's Old Boys to move level on points after a 3-0 victory Sunday over Banfield. Both have 20 points after 10 matches.

In other Sunday matches: Union won over Arsenal 1-0, and Argentinos Juniors drew 0-0 with Belgrano.

Tigre's Morales scored with a perfectly placed free kick that left Boca keeper Orion flat footed and unable to do anything but watch the ball sail into the corner of the net.

Boca attacked most of the match with Tigre content to counterattack. As the match went on, Tigre looked more and more in control with Boca threatening late.

Santiago Silva had one of Boca's best chances to score when he sailed a shot just wide in the 77th, setting the stage for Insaurralde's equalizer.

Newell's, one of the surprises of the season, picked up three second-half goal from Santiago Vergini, Fabian Munoz and Victor Aquino.

On Saturday, Independiente defeated fierce rival Racing 4-1 in the Avellaneda derby. Facundo Parra scored two to lead Independiente. Teofilo Gutierrez scored Racing's only goal.

Racing coach Alfio Basile resigned after the loss with his team on only nine points from 10 matches. Racing was one of the favorites entering the season and has been the major disappointment of the Clausura season.

This was the 68-year-old Basile's fourth stint as Racing's coach. Basile — known as Coco — coached the Argentine national team to two Copa America titles in the 1990s but resigned after Argentina's disappointing 1994 World Cup. He took over again in 2006 but resigned in 2008, setting the stage for Diego Maradona to take over.

Other weekend matches finished: Estudiantes 2, Colon 2; San Lorenzo 3, Godoy Cruz 0; Velez 3, San Martin 1; All Boys 2, Olimpo 1.

Lanus faces Rafaela on Monday.
