We accept election results: MDP

Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has stated that the party accepts the results of the Thimarafushi and Kaashidhoo by-elections held yesterday.

Party Spokesperson Maafannu Uthuru MP Imthiyaz Fahmy (Inthi) said at a press conference held at MDP office today that MDP fully accepts the election results, and that MDP candidate for Thimarafushi seat Mohamed Mustafa indicated that he did not accept the result of the election because he had noted several things in relation to the election.

“Mustafa mentioned some things he came across during the election. But we as a party accept the election results,” Inthi said.

Inthi noted that even though some negative incidents took place during the voting, it is not likely that the results of the elections were affected by these incidents.

He said that even though MDP did not win the Thimarafushi and Kaashidhoo seats, they have made comparative progress in these elections. The party will conduct a study into why it were defeated.

“We can only comment on this issue after we complete investigations,” Inthi said.

Inthi said that one reason for their defeat in Thimarafushi election is that several eligible voters were not registered.

President of Elections Commission Fuad Thaufeeg has also indicated that the elections were independent and fair, and no incidents could have affected the election outcome.

MDP candidate Mustafa received 1327 of 3121 votes casted in the Thimarafushi by-election; and MDP candidate Ahmed Haleem (Dhonbilaiy) received 919 out of 2060 votes casted in the Kaashidhoo by-election.

Thimarafushi seat was won by Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) candidate Ahmed Shareef, while Jumhooree party candidate Abdullah Jabir won the Kaashidhoo seat.
