Deputy Leader of Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) Dr Abdullah Mausoom has said that DRP will remain sincere despite losing minority status at the Parliament.
Kelaa MP Dr Mausoom said that DRP does not give importance to majority party or minority party, and losing minority status will not affect its work or its campaign for the presidential election.
“DRP’s performance does not depend on majority or minority parties. Members of Parliament of DRP are known for their responsible, intellectual participation in parliament debates. They base their arguments and votes on ways which will benefit citizens. Members of Parliament of DRP will remain this way in the future as well,” Dr Mausoom said.
He said that DRP will collaborate with other parties for the benefit of the people, but will stand up against parties whose ideologies do not match those of DRP.
He noted that Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s defeat at yesterday’s two Parliamentary by-elections shows that people want democracy, and reflects people’s support for the current government.
Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) becomes the minority party in the Parliament following the victory of PPM’s Ahmed Shareef at yesterday’s Thimarafushi by-election.
PPM now has official representation in the parliament with seventeen members.
PPM will become the minority party at the Parliament once PPM Members of Parliament crossover as required by Parliament regulations. DRP parliamentary group consists of fourteen members.
However majority party status at the Parliament is still held by MDP still with 32 members.
