Commissioner of Prisons Mohamed Husham has said that the concreting and construction work related to the 20-foot wall around Maafushi Prison, will be carried out by inmates.
The construction of a wall around Maafushi Prison, to improve prison security, was announced by the Ministry of Home Affairs yesterday.
Speaking to Sun Online after a ceremony held in Maafushi today to inaugurate the construction of the wall, Husham said that the project will be supervised by foreign experts and engineers.
He said that about 50 to 100 inmates will be involved in this project, which will be completed by the end of the year.
“They will be paid for their work. The wages will be deposited to the inmates’ accounts. The accounts are managed by us. There is a fixed daily amount that can be withdrawn from these accounts,” said Husham.
Minister of Home Affairs Umar Naseer said that the cost of the project, to construct a 20-foot high, 1.4-kilometre long wall, is MVR 4.2 million.
The project will be funded by the government, and it would not be possible to complete the construction of the wall within a budget of MVR 4.2 million without the involvement of inmates, said Umar Naseer.
