Vandals cut down trees on Majeedee Magu

Areca nut trees planted by the Male’ City Council have been cut down by a group as an act of vandalism on Wednesday night.

The police spokesperson said that the incident, where four trees on Majeedee Magu were cut down, was reported at 3:20 a.m., and the case is under investigation.

“It has been reported that the trees were cut down by people on two motorcycles. No one has been arrested yet,” said the police spokesperson.

Male’ City Council said they would not cut down healthy trees on the streets, and they are not informed of who carried out this crime.

“We don’t know who did this. The trees were probably cut down sometime early this morning,” Senior Supervisor at Male’ City Council Mohamed Zubair told Sun Online.

The trees that were cut down were located near Athama Palace, ADK Hospital, PG Office, and Ooreedoo Office.

A hundred thousand areca nut trees have been gifted to Maldives by the government of India. The trees that were cut down on Majeedee Magu last night, were planted in 2011. Areca nut trees have been cut down before during times of political turmoil.
