A total of 104 people, most of them former members of Jumhooree Party (JP), have joined ruling party Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) in Alifu Dhaalu Maamigili.
The 104 people’s membership forms were presented to PPM President and former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, at an event held at PPM Office this afternoon.
Speaking at the event, Gayoom noted that prior to this, PPM had only 34 members in Maamigili, and the decision by the large group of people to join PPM was great progress for the party.
He said that this would also encourage other people from the island, as well as people from other islands in Haa Dhaalu Atoll, to join PPM.
Mohamed Rasheed, a senior official involved in the presentation of the membership forms to PPM, said that while the majority of the people who joined PPM today were former members of JP, they also include former members of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and people who previously did not belong to any party.
“A lot of them were from JP. We joined PPM because JP is not able to fulfil our requests. I don’t think any party, except PPM, has the capability to do this for us,” he said.
Gayoom said that PPM is currently the political party in the Maldives with “the largest number of valid members”, and efforts are ongoing to increase membership.
