The Communications Authority of the Maldives has blocked six websites that have been sharing anti-Islamic content.
Chief Executive of the Authority Ilyas Ahmed told Sun today that the websites were blocked about two weeks ago, and these websites were targeted at Maldivians and hosted from abroad.
Among these six, two were online radio streaming sites; and they were blocked because the content they aired were against Islamic views and included Christian religious songs and content promoting Christianity which was targeted at Maldivians, he said.
“We are blocking these websites when we are informed by the concerning authorities or the general public. We also block websites that come to the attention of this authority,” Ilyas said.
While six websites have been blocked due to anti-Islamic content, there are cases of Facebook and some other social media making a mockery of the Holy Quran and Prophet Mohamed (PBUH). This is currently under investigation.
Ilyas also said that to shut down Facebook pages, Facebook itself has to be blocked in the country; but discussions are ongoing with authorities to take down Facebook pages with such content.
