President meets with new SAARC Secretary General

The new Secretary General of South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) Mr Ahmed Saleem has paid a courtesy call on President Dr Mohamed Waheed.

Discussions at the meeting, held at President's Office this afternoon, were focused on ways to implement the decisions made during the SAARC Summit held last year in the Maldives, and steps to be taken to speed up these projects.

Secretary General Saleem stressed that one of his top priorities would be to strengthen the SAARC secretariat. He updated the President on the progress made in this regard.

Saleem, who has also acted as President of Human Rights Commission of Maldives, thanked the government for the support and assistance accorded to SAARC. He noted that SAARC has great potential, especially in strengthening trade ties between member countries.
