Sagaru Ahmed Nasir released from prison

Sagaru Ahmed Nasir, who was sentenced to life imprisonment following the death of 19 Maldivians in a coup attempt on 3 November 1988, has been released from prison.

Information Officer at the Ministry of Home Affairs Thamzeel Abdul Samad told Sun Online today, that Nasir was released last week following completion of his prison term.

Nasir was sentenced in 1989, and according to the Penal Code, the prison term for persons who are given life imprisonment is 25 years.

Abdulla Luthfy, who was also sentenced to prison in relation to the 1988 coup, has been missing since 2012. He escaped while in Sri Lanka on medical parole of one year.

Thamzeel said that police efforts are still ongoing to determine Luthfy’s whereabouts.

Nasir also escaped while in Sri Lanka on two-month medical parole in 2009. He was returned to prison in 2012.
