Jumhoory Party leader and Maamigili MP Gasim Ibrahim has sent a letter to the Police, Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) and the Parliament stating that he has recently received death threats via SMS.
In his letter, Gasim said the text messages, sent from a local mobile phone number on Monday, read: “We will take your life if you keep saying things in the media.” Another message from a local private number stated: “We will wipe out you and your family from Male’,” according to Gasim’s letter to the Commissioner of Police Hussain Waheed.
He said that the owners of the mobile numbers, upon being contacted, denied sending such messages and claimed that such messages could have been sent from a mobile phone number duplicating software, used through the internet.
“Therefore, I view this as a threat to my daily living and my life itself, and appeal to the authorities to investigate the matter with the utmost seriousness,” read the letter to the Police Commissioner.
MPs from different political parties, along with three female MPs of the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), have received an increasing number of anonymous death threats via SMS since the beginning of this month.
