Fishermen

The official ceremony to mark Fishermen’s Day this year will be held in Lhaviyani Naifaru, the Ministry of Fisheries and Agriculture has announced today.

The ministry said that this was decided yesterday, following evaluation of proposals received from several islands to host the 34th Fishermen’s Day ceremony later this year.

Last year’s ceremony was held in Dhaalu Meedhoo.

The ministry said that the purpose of marking Fishermen’s Day is to encourage and empower fishermen, and to recognise their hard work and contribution to society.

Maldives first marked Fishermen’s Day on 10 December 1981.
