Commissioner General of Customs Ahmed Mohamed has said that the new policy announced by the Maldivian government, to prohibit the import of products made in Israel, has been enforced today.
Speaking to Sun Online, he said, “The government has decided, in condemnation of the Israeli offensive on Palestine, to prohibit the import of Israeli products to the Maldives. This policy has been enforced today.”
He warned that while this ban is in place, action will be taken against any party that tries to bring Israeli products into the country.
“From today, any attempt to import Israeli products will be blocked, and the importer will be given the chance to re-export, failing which the products will be destroyed,” he said.
According to Customs records, products worth about MVR 9 million were imported last year, and products worth about MVR 3 million have been imported so far this year to the Maldives from Israel.
In addition to the ban on the import of Israeli products, the government has also annulled three agreements signed with Israel by the administration of former President Mohamed Nasheed.
