Parliament has today granted consent to appoint former Maavashu MP Abdul Azeez Jamaal Abu-Bakur to the newly established post of Information Commissioner.
Abdul Azeez Jamaal Abu-Bakur passed the parliament vote with 60 votes in favour, 19 votes against and 2 abstentions.
Independent Institutions Committee on Wednesday night agreed to recommend Abdul Azeez Jamaal to the parliament floor. He scored 88.1 percent in the committee evaluation.
Article 44 (d) of the Right to Information Act, which came into force on 12 July, requires the President to nominate and appoint with parliament consent, an Information Commissioner charged with implementing the relevant right to information legislation.
