Erosion prevention projects for 12 islands to begin within the year

The government has plans to begin projects on prevention of erosion in 12 islands before the end of the year, Minister of Environment and Energy Thoriq Ibrahim has said today.

Speaking at a question session in parliament, Thoriq Ibrahim also said that out of the 114 islands facing erosion, 67 are facing severe erosion.

“By the time the issue is resolved, over 25,000 people will no longer face issues of erosion or tidal waves,” said the Environment Minister.

He said that the 10 of the erosion prevention projects will be funded by Public Sector Investment Programs (PSIP) in the government budget and that the project for a single island will be funded by an international donor.
