Court orders Heavy Load to pay over MVR 200,000 to Customs

Civil Court issued a verdict on Thursday ordering Heavy Load Maldives Pvt Ltd to pay MVR 266,551.10 to the Maldives Customs Service, in default import duty payments for two shipments of goods brought in November 2008.

Civil Court in its verdict said that the company failed to send back two shipments which were imported to the Maldives on 9 and 30 November 2008 on condition that they would be sent back within a specified period.

Heavy Load Maldives, a marine construction company, is owned by Deputy Speaker of the Parliament Reeko Moosa Manik. The sentence was issued by Civil Court in the absence of the company.
