Wrecked Vietnamese cargo ship fined MVR 508 million

Vietnamese cargo ship 'MV Viet Long' which ran aground on a reef near Summer Island Village in Male’ Atoll on 31 May has been fined MVR 508,572,900 for the extensive damage caused to the reef, Chairman of Transport Authority of Maldives Abdul Rasheed Nafiz told Sun Online today.

“The fine was calculated based on the damage to the reef alone when the boat ran aground. There was leakage of oil from the boat into the sea. This will be investigated and fined separately,” said Abdul Rasheed Nafiz.

Director General of the Environment Protection Agency (EPA) Ibrahim Naseem said that the record fine was decided, following the relevant investigation by the authority, due to the extensive damage to the environment.
