Parliament has today rejected a motion to bring to the parliament’s attention by Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) MP Imthiyaz Fahmy, the not-guilty verdict announced by
Judicial Service Commission (JSC) upon Supreme Court Judge Ali Hameed for charges of having extramarital affairs.
The Maafannu-north MP’s extraordinary motion was presented to the 7th sitting of the second session of the parliament held today and was rejected with 44 against the 18 in favour.
Presenting the motion to parliament, MP Fahmy argued that absolving the Supreme Court Judge from misconduct undermines the integrity of the Supreme Court and that it would further impact the implementation of justice in the Maldives.
An alleged sex-tape involving Supreme Court Judge Ali Hameed Mohamed was leaked on social media and police launched investigations into the case in July 2012. JSC declared Judge Ali Hameed not guilty on Friday, more than one year after it commenced its own inquiry.
