Authorities required to inform PG before filing for extension of detention

High Court has ruled that relevant authorities have to inform the Prosecutor General (PG) before filing extension-of-detention requests in cases already forwarded to the PG.

In instances where the detention period of the accused expires after the case has been forwarded to the Prosecutor General’s Office for prosecution, authorities are now required to seek in writing from the Prosecutor General, before going to the courts to get an extension of detention for the accused, a police official explained.

The official said the ruling was made this year and that police have now started to follow the procedure.
