Crime level unchanged in first five months: Police

Statistics revealed by Maldives Police Service have shown that crime level in the country has not increased in the first five months of 2014, compared with the corresponding period of 2013.

Police said that the number of crimes reported over the first five months of 2013 was 7,512, while the number of crimes reported over the first five months of 2014 was 7,608 – an increase of only 1 percent.

Assaults decreased by 15 percent in May 2014 compared with April 2014. The number of assaults reported to police in May and April were 92 and 109 respectively.

Crime level went down by 5 percent in May 2014 compared with May 2013. This includes assault, theft, mugging, sexual misconduct, domestic abuse, and traffic violations. The number of crimes reported to police in May 2013 and May 2014 were 1,534 and 1,453 respectively.

Drug offences however increased by 9 percent over the first five months of this year compared with the corresponding period last year. The number of drug offences reported to police in May 2013 and May 2014 were 1,539 and 1,708 respectively.
