Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has announced plans, on the occasion of this year’s World Environment Day, to protect all types of rays that exist in Maldivian waters.
Speaking at a press conference today, Director General of EPA Ibrahim Naeem said that from tomorrow onwards, catching of rays of all types would be illegal in the Maldives.
“A lot of people think that manta rays are protected in the Maldives. But this has not been the case. So we urge everyone to refrain from catching or harming all types of rays,” said Naeem.
He said that 18 different types or rays have been recorded in the Maldives, but more varieties are likely to exist than recorded.
