Former President of the Maldives Mohamed Nasheed has condemned the United States of America for “not taking into consideration the fact that he ruled the Maldives in line with the US mindset”. Nasheed said that he ruled the Maldives for three years in consistency with the policies of the US and that he was “sad because the US, in the end, did not consider that and went ahead and recognized current President Waheed’s government”.
Nasheed said that he tried to create close relations with Israel in order to comply with the policies of the USA.
Speaking at ‘Democracy Now’, a television and radio program aired in the USA by some private networks, Nasheed said on Thursday that the USA recognized Dr. Waheed’s government “without looking at what happened in the Maldives”. Nasheed also expressed his hope that the US would review its stand, reconsider the Maldivian issue, and call for early presidential elections.
“It surprised me to find out that the US unhesitatingly accepted the return of the old dictatorship, and it also saddened me. We had hoped that the US would consider proofs that would tell them what really happened in the Maldives. We still hope that the US would consider that and call for the resignation of dictator, or Dr. Waheed, and for early presidential elections”, Nasheed said.
Nasheed said that what saddened hi most was that the US could not realize that he ruled the Maldives for 3 years in line with the views of the US.
“During the last three years, we tried to run our country with a democracy that is in accordance with the American ideals, and we wanted to have close relations with Israel. We tried to make the Maldives a moderate Islamic nation. For all civil freedoms and human rights. It deeply grieved me to find out that you (the US Government) did not understand what happened in the Maldives”, said Nasheed.
