Players injured after bus carrying Afghan football team collides in Addu

A bus carrying Afghanistan national team has encountered an accident in Addu City, injuring some of the players. The accident occurred on Hankede causeway, about 10 minutes after the Afghanistan team left Addu Football Stadium to return to their camp in Herethere, after playing the 12th match of the 2014 Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Challenge Cup against Laos. One official and five players from the Afghanistan national football team have been injured in the accident, according to Sun Online’s Saaid Ahmed, who is currently at the scene. Additionally, a policeman suffered a fractured arm and the bus driver also received various injuries, Saaid said. All injured individuals are being examined at Hithadhoo Regional Hospital.

The injured policeman will also be brought to Male’ at 11:00 p.m. tonight, onboard a flight scheduled to transport Laos and Myanmar national teams. Transferring the Afghanistan national team to Male’ remains undecided as none of the players suffered serious injuries. The Afghanistan national team, who qualified for the semi-finals of the 2014 AFC Challenge Cup, was originally scheduled to arrive in Male’ on Monday.

Mohamed Nazeeh told Sun Online that none of the players suffered serious injuries, but J:18 midfielder Ahmad Hitifi, who was injured during today’s match, has further hurt his ankle during the accident.

Players are under psychological stress rather than much physical injury, because of the suddenness of the incident.

Football Association of Maldives (FAM) has released details of the injured players. Afghanistan captain Zohib Islam Amiri is also amongst the injured. Amiri has suffered injuries to his right ankle. Afghanistan head coach, Manager and Media Official have been injured, along with Defender Faisal Shakhizada, Forward Hashmatullah Barakzai, and Defender Mustafa Hadid.

Minister of Youth and Sports Mohamed Maleeh Jamal told Sun Online moments ago that the government is closely looking into the cause of the road accident and that they are prepared to lend every possible assistance to the injured players.

Sports Ministry is ready to give all possible assistance to the injured players. We are looking into the cause of the matter, through the police.
