President's Office opens applications for Information Commissioner post

President’s Office has opened applications for the position of Information Commissioner.

The President’s Office on Wednesday published the announcement for applications in the government gazette. Submission of applications for the Information Commissioner position is open until 3:00 p.m. on 1 June 2014, said President’s Office.

The Right to Information Act, ratified on 12 January, establishes an independent Information Commissioner’s Office headed by an Information Commissioner, an individual approved by the parliament.

Applicants for the Information Commissioner post must be at least 35 years of age, must not have a criminal or corruption conviction, must not be an elected official, must not be a member of a political party, must have a graduate degree in a relevant field and seven years of experience.

The applicants will be review by the President’s Office and nominated for parliament approval. A parliament committee will review the applicant and approval will be granted through vote by the parliament floor. The Information Commissioner will be appointed by the President.
