President Abdulla Yameen has decided to attend tonight’s 2014 AFC Challenge Cup match, alongside former president Mohamed Nasheed.
Main opposition party Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) leader Mohamed Nasheed is to appear as the guest of honour at the National Football Stadium in Male’ tonight for the match between Maldives and Kyrgyzstan.
Tonight's match will be first public appearance by both political leaders along side each other since President Yameen's inauguration on 17 November last year.
The two leaders will be seated side by side at the stadium, and will be accompanied by Vice President Dr Mohamed Jameel Ahmed and cabinet ministers, the President’s Office said today.
It is unclear if former president and leader of the ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) Maumoon Abdul Gayoom will attend tonight's match. The former president was the guest of honour at the inauguration match between Maldives and Myanmar on Monday.
Former president Dr Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik will appear as the guest of honour at the match between Maldives and Palestine on Friday. President Yameen is also scheduled to attend Friday’s match, according to the President’s Office.
