Commissioner of Police calls to speed up law-making process to reduce crime

Commissioner of Police Abdulla Riyaz has called on Members of the Parliament to work with the spirit of the nation in speeding up the law-making process in order to reduce crime in the society.

Speaking at a function held at Iskandar koshi to mark the 79th anniversary of police service in the Maldives, the Commissioner said that the creation and enforcement of laws would be of great support to Police efforts to reduce crimes in the country.

“We will not hesitate in taking steps against those who damage state property. I assure the Police that they will be compensated for any harm caused to them while they are serving and protecting the country within the limits of the law,” Commissioner Riyaz said.

He noted the President and Housing Minister’s efforts in the commencement of a housing scheme to improve the living standard of the police and their families.

Riyaz said that the restructuring within Maldives Police would enable speedier investigations of the complaints made against the Police. He urged all Police officers to keep their actions within the limits of the law, as every officer will be held accountable for his own actions.

Last year alone, actions were taken against 87 Police officers.

Commissioner Riyaz noted the increase in the number of cases reported to Police in 2011 when compared with 2010, and said that theft, drug-related crimes, sexual offences and domestic violence have increased.

The Commissioner said that the Police are faced with new challenges due to the changes in Police leadership last month. He noted that every such change will be first submitted to the Police executive board.
