Prosecutor General’s Office has refused to advocate in court in the absence of a Prosecutor General and his Deputy. Deputy Prosecutor General Hussain Shameem resigned yesterday.
In a letter by Assistant Prosecutor General Ahmed Hameed Fahmy to Criminal Court, Juvenile Court and Drug Court today, the Prosecutor General’s Office said that the office does not have a legal right to advocate in courts in the absence of a Prosecutor General, or a Deputy Prosecutor General.
Prosecutor General’s Act states that a new person must be appointed to the Prosecutor General’s post within 30 days from the day the post becomes vacant. However, Hussain Shameem has been acting Prosecutor General since Ahmed Muizzu resigned on 25 November last year. Shameem resigned around 3:30 p.m. yesterday.
