Deputy Prosecutor General resigns

Deputy Prosecutor General Hussain Shameem has resigned.

Shameem resigned around 3:30 p.m., according to official from the Prosecutor General’s Office who spoke to Sun Online moments ago. Reasons for the resignation is unclear. Shameem was unavailable for comment at the time of press.

Prosecutor General’s Act states that a new person must be appointed to the Prosecutor General’s post within 30 days from the day the Prosecutor General’s position becomes vacant. However, Hussain Shameem has been acting Prosecutor General since Ahmed Muizzu resigned on 25 November last year.

Five people, including Hussain Shameem, applied for the Prosecutor General post after President’s Office called for application for a second time, after the parliament rejected president’s nomination Maumoon Hameed on 14 April.
