President appoints Rukshana to PIC

President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has today appointed Aminath Rukshana Ibrahim to the Police Integrity Commission (PIC).

Parliament approved Rukshana on 27 April with a majority of 29 votes in favour.

However, Parliament went to vote after President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom had written to withdraw the nomination and the President’s Office had later said that they will seek an opinion from the Attorney General’s Office before making the appointment.

Rukshana was nominated by former president Dr Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik’s administration.

Parliament Committee on Independent Institutions approved Rukshana on 3 April. She scored 75 points in the committee review.
