Number of projects increase fourfold for MTCC

Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has said that the number of projects awarded to the company increased fourfold in the first quarter (Q1) of 2014 compared with the corresponding period of 2013.

MTCC said in its first quarterly report for 2014 published today that the number of projects awarded to the company were 18 and 4 in Q1 of 2014 and Q1 of 2013 respectively.

The report states that MTCC had implemented 42 projects and completed four projects by the end of Q1 of 2014.

It notes that the company completed several harbour and road construction projects this year, and carried out one electrification project and several airport development projects.

The report highlights that several harbour construction and erosion prevention projects had been delayed due to difficulties in obtaining aggregate from India, as no official agreement had been reached in this regard despite the temporary permit to export aggregate to Maldives.

To overcome this, 10,000 tons of aggregate was obtained from Oman in January, and the material also started arriving from India in March, said the report.

Noteworthy projects completed by MTCC include harbour construction in Faafu Bilehdhoo, deepening of the channel in Haa Alifu Kelaa, harbour construction in Laamu Kunahandhoo, and development of Thaa Thimarafushi Domestic Airport.
