Over MVR 50,000 illegally spent on Fuvahmulah mosque renovation: Audit report

An Auditor General’s report has revealed that the Fuvahmulah Dhoondigan Council spent MVR 54,900 against the Public Finance Act, to renovate three mosques in 2012.

The Auditor General’s report of the Dhoondigan Council said that the council failed to announce for tenders before awarding the renovation projects, as required by the Public Finance Act.

The council had a habit of keeping its revenue in its office for long periods of time, a practice prohibited by the Public Finance Act, the report said.

The Auditor General's report further revealed that from September 2012 until the end of 2013, Fuvahmulah Dhoogandu Council paid MVR 48,513 in overtime to employees without proper record or authorization from the council’s chief.

In its reports of Fuvahmulah Dhiguvaadu and Maadhandu councils for 2012, also published recently by the The Auditor General’s Office, said that all three councils had neglected to maintain proper records of their revenues for the audited period.

In addition, the three councils did not file financial statements for auditing and the office had assembled its reports based on financial transactions for the year 2012, the Auditor General’s Office said in its reports.
