Marriage between local women and foreign men doubles

Family Court has said that the number of local women who married foreign men doubled in 2013 compared with 2012.

The court’s statistics show that 30 women married foreigners in 2012, while 62 women married foreigners in 2013.

A total of 42 out of these 62 marriages took place abroad, and have been filed to Family Court for registration.

Family Court has said that the number of local women marrying Bangladeshi men has increased over the past years.

The number of local men who married foreign women was 76 and 71 in 2013 and 2012 respectively.

Divorce rate is higher in marriages between Maldivian men and foreign women, than in marriages between Maldivian women and foreign men.
