Cases sent to PG Office against three officials for violating Public Finance Regulation

Cases against former State Minister for Upper-South Province Umar Jamal and two deputies of the province have been sent to the Prosecutor General’s (PG) Office, for violating the Public Finance Regulation.

The two deputies involved in this case are Mohamed Shareef from Vilingili and Mohamed Shareef from Thinadhoo.

The case states that money was taken against the law from the Province Office budget in relation to sports tournaments and other events in 2009 and 2010.

Anti-Corruption Commission said in a statement today that MVR 30,764.03 was taken from the budget for 2009, and MVR 87,758 was taken from the budget of 2010.

ACC said that the money was taken from budgets allocated for fuel expenses, domestic travel expenses, social services expenses, and overtime expenses.

The Public Finance Regulation states that it is an offence to take money from an item other than the one designated for the particular activity, and in the event that not enough budget exists for a particular activity, Finance Ministry shall be requested to transfer funds to the relevant item.
