President to discuss parliament speakership issue with Gasim

President Abdulla Yameen has said that he will discuss the issue of parliament speakership with coalition member Jumhooree Party (JP) Leader Gasim Ibrahim.

He said this while speaking to reporters prior to departing on an official visit to Japan.

“I would be the first one to suffer if the parliament slows down or fails to prioritise issues that are important to the government. I would be the one held accountable by the people,” he said.

He highlighted that parliament speakership should go to a member of ruling party, Progressive Part of Maldives (PPM), and said that no discussions have taken place on this issue within the coalition.

“I understand that Gasim is also interested in the role of parliament speaker. We will hold further discussions with Gasim, within the coalition,” he said.
