Fish price increased by 50 laari per kilo

Ministry of Fisheries and Agriculture has said that the price of fish in the local market has been increased by 50 laari per kilo.

Speaking at a press conference at Velaanaage today to provide information on efforts by the Fisheries Promotion Board to improve fisheries in the Maldives, Minister of Fisheries and Agriculture Dr Mohamed Shainee said that the price of fish had seen significant reduction lately, which has been followed by complaints from fishermen.

He said that following discussions with relevant companies, it had been decided to increase the price of fish by 50 laari per kilo.

“Local companies have seen reduced supply for some time now. This makes the price of fish somewhat stable. Fish prices have not gone up in the international market. To encourage fishermen, we held discussions with companies and decided to change the price,” said Minister Shainee.

He said that some international parties have requested to hold a forum in the Maldives to increase local fish products in the international market.

This would be the first international fisheries forum to be held in the Maldives.

Minister Shainee said that the forum, which will be attended by retailers from countries around the world, will be held in September 2014.
