Students injured after tree trunk fell on assembly

Six students in Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll Education Centre (GDAEC) in Thinadhoo were injured today after a tree trunk fell on an assembly gathered to mark the school’s 30th anniversary.

Speaking to Sun, GDAEC Principal Zeema Abdulla said the incident happened around 8:40 a.m. and that three of the students were taken to island’s hospital for treatment. Examination shows that none of the students suffered serious injures, Zeema said.

“The trunk hit six children and three of them have been admitted. No one suffered serious injuries. They were hurt, and x-rays were taken. The children are in shock. They are being treated for the trauma, but there were no serious injuries,” Zeema said.

She said that the trunk, of a large tree located inside the school grounds, fell from decay. However, Zeema said that the wind was not unusually strong and that the weather seemed is bright and sunny.
