Registration for fishermen

President Abdulla Yameen has announced that the government will start issuing registration forms for its MVR 10,000 per fisherman insurance scheme in April.

Proposed in the ruling Progressive Party of Maldives’ (PPM), the insurance scheme aims to ensure that every fisherman receives a basic coverage of MVR 10,000, regardless of the catch.

Speaking at a rally in Gaafu Dhaalu Thinadhoo to mark the ruling party’s victory in the recent parliamentary election, President Yameen said the government hopes to have the scheme in place by the end of May.

He noted that fuel prices will also see a reduction within the next two months, mainly through the State Trading Organization’s (STO) efforts to strike a deal to import fuel from India.

Speaking at last night's event, President Yameen noted the importance of the parliament’s responsibilities and said that the parliament must be made accountable from within the institution itself.

Concluding his speech, President Yameen highlighted the government’s priority for the development of younger generations and said government will sincerely recognize hard working young people in the future.
