MP Hamid faces second charge for refusing to provide urine sample

Prosecutor General’s Office has charged Henveyru South MP Hamid Abdul Gafoor with refusing to provide a urine sample again, after he was suspected of having been intoxicated during Ramadan.

The new case against Hamid states that he was arrested on 21 July 2012, after he broke though police barricades at the traffic light near Dhiraagu, gathered a group of people to obstruct police efforts, used offensive language against police officers, and tried to create unrest in the area.

Hamid refused to comply when he was asked to provide a urine sample after officers suspected based on his actions and language that he was intoxicated.

Hamid has also been charged with refusing to provide a urine sample after he was arrested on suspicion of drug and alcohol use in Haa Dhaalu Hondaidhoo.

If convicted in both cases, he will face a prison sentence of two years.
