Court to deliver verdict on Sheereen murder case next month

Criminal Court has announced that its verdict on the case against Mohamed Najah, who has been charged with murder following the death of his then girlfriend, Mariyam Sheereen, next month.

At today’s trial, which was held after a long break, lawyers presented their concluding statements.

The State Prosecutor said that Sheereen was assaulted by Najah, and witnesses had testified having heard Najah threaten to kill Sheereen while speaking to her on the phone.

She said that Najah took Sheereen to a room at Kurahaage, and tried to keep people away from the room.

Sheereen’s body was found at a house under construction called M. Angaagiri.

The State Prosecutor claimed that Sheereen was murdered and taken in a suitcase to this location, and showed a video of Najah walking with a suitcase to prove this claim.

A taxi driver had also testified that Najah took a suitcase on his taxi, and DNA found in the boot of the taxi matched Sheereen’s, said the State Prosecutor.

Najah’s lawyer said that the State had not presented sufficient evidence to prove its case.

He said that the suitcase was owned by Sheereen, and thus finding her DNA on the suitcase does not prove that she was murdered by Najah.
