Police rescue Maldivian abducted by group of foreigners

Police have rescued a Maldivian man after he was assaulted and abducted by a group of foreigners in an island being developed as a tourist resort in Alifu Alifu Atoll.

Police said that the Maldivian victim was the person in charge of the group of foreigners, and that he was abducted for not providing them their due salaries.

The man was rescued in a joint operation carried out by Mahibadhoo Police Station and Dhangethi Police Station at 1:45 p.m. yesterday.

Police said that 31 foreigners were involved in the unrest in the island, and six Bangladeshis aged between 25 and 35 had been arrested.

The six people were arrested after they assaulted Maldivians working on the island, and abducted the person in charge. Police have not revealed details of the assault.

Police have found wooden rods, iron rods, machetes, and box cutters at the quarters of the foreigners in the island.
