Hoarafushi airport construction will begin in three months: Siyam

Ruling coalition partner Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) leader, Meedhoo MP Ahmed Siyam Mohamed has announced the construction of an airport in Haa Alif Hoarafushi, set to begin within the next three months.

Siyam made the announcement at an event to launch the campaign for Mohamed Ismail, the coalition’s Hoarafushi candidate for the 22 March parliamentary election.

Speaking at the event, the MDA leader noted that being from the northern-most atoll, the people of Haa Alif had always found it more difficult to travel to the capital for medical and other necessities. The airport, which will be built after reclamation and enlargement of the island - will ease the problem of accessibility, Siyam said.

Siyam also announced the government’s plans to build a boat yard for fishermen and improve the health centre in Hoarafushi.

The MDA leader criticized the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) leadership and said that at the end former president Nasheed’s three years in government, every Maldivian citizen had a debt in excess of MVR 300,000. The ruling coalition government will reduce the debt to MVR 100,000 by the end of this year and bring the debt to surplus with three years, Siyam assured.
