Ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) parliamentary candidate Abdulla Rifau (Bochey) has asked the police to investigate the leaked phone call between former president Mohamed Nasheed and recently sacked president of the Elections Commission Fuad Thaufeeq.
Speaking to the media after making the report, Rifau said that he does not believe that the matters discussed in the leaked conversation were held in the best interest of the public. The conversation is worrying, he added.
In a phone call leaked on Youtube today, former president Mohamed Nasheed and former Elections Commission president Fuad Thaufeeq are heard discussing an agreement on the distribution of the voters on the Male’ general registry, to different wards in the capital.
At a hearing for a contempt of court case against the Elections Commission on Sunday, Supreme Court sentenced the commission’s president Fuad Thaufeeg to six months in prison and sentenced to disqualify Fuad and his deputy Ahmed Fayaz as members of commission, for disparaging court procedures.
Despite filing of the case with the police, PPM does not now want to postpone the election, Rifau said. The parliamentary election is scheduled for 22 March.
