Ministry of Housing and Infrastructure has signed a MVR 18.6 million contract with Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) to construct a harbour in Meemu Naalaafushi.
Housing Minister Dr Mohamed Muizzu and CEO of MTCC Ahmed Shiham signed the contract at an event at the Ministry today. The project will be financed from the State budget.
Construction of the harbour will begin next week, Dr Muizzu said speaking to the media today. The government, when allocating harbour projects, will prioritize islands with the worst harbour conditions, he added.
Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) for the Naalaafushi harbour has been completed. The Ministry needs to approve the EIA before the construction can begin. The 200 by 300 foot harbour is to be completed within 6 months.
Naalaafushi harbour will be completed before the deadline, MTCC CEO Ahmed Shiham said. Issues regarding the availability of construction materials have been solved, he said.
The government’s construction arm, MTCC is currently constructing 36 different harbours through 17 projects around the country. The company hopes to complete 15 projects by the end of the year, Shiham said.
