Former President Mohamed Nasheed has said that more than Rf 400 million, which had not been included in the budget, has been spent by the government on Police and MNDF over the past two months. This includes the budget for development work in Addu.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of ‘MDP Addu City meeting’ held at Nasandhura today, Nasheed said that half the budget for the development of Addu and half the budget for Aasandha have been used on Police and MNDF. He said that development projects will not progress if this money is spent other things.
“Things are not happening according to the law. We know that all the money set aside for the development of Addu has been spent on Police and MNDF. I have no doubt in my heart that, over the past two months, over Rf 400 million has been spent outside the budget on Police and MNDF,” Nasheed said.
As usual, he reiterated that it would be wrong to believe that a government which came into power through a coup would uphold the principles of democracy. No progress can be made in terms of development in Addu before democracy can be re-established.
“As included in this year’s budget, the harbours of Hulhumeedhoo, Feydhoo Hithadhoo are close to completion. Development works such as building stadiums and sewerage systems can only be done by a democratic government. It would be useless to believe that a dictatorship can complete the efforts started by a democracy,” Nasheed said.
He said that the meeting which commenced today will be conducted in Addu and that he will travel to Addu.
